FRIDAY FORUM DANCES
More than 400 teens come to the Whittier Community Center each month for an evening of dance and socialization. This program is in its’ tenth year and continues to grow in popularity. Teens in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, who live or attend school in Whittier, may attend. Whittier Police Officers, Whittier Community Services Department staff, and volunteers ensure a safe, fun environment. Teens enjoy the music of popular local DJ Guilleromo Hinojoso, participate in contests or crafts projects, play games, or just chill out with their friends.
Our thanks go out to the many parents, high school students, and other community members who volunteer their services to help make the dance a success. Dances are held one Friday of each month, October through June, from 7 P.M. to 10 P.M. For more information, please call (562) 945-8287.
PARENTING TEENS 101
While your teens are dancing, check out Parenting Teens 101!
These classes aim to support parents with the knowledge and tools to continue developing better relationships with their teen. A wide variety of topics are covered in each session, held at the Whittier Community Center (7630 S. Whittier Blvd.) from 7pm to 8:30pm on the first Friday of each month in both Spanish and English.
CLUB DEXTER
If your child attends Dexter Middle School, we have a fantastic after-school program for your teen. Studies have shown that 95% of all teenage pathology (unplanned pregnancies, drug use, gang involvement, and other criminal behavior) occurs between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm. This is a time period when many parents are still at work and their kids are home alone.
Club Dextor operates each day that school is in session, even "minimum days." It is a safe, fun, well-supervised program, staffed by wonderful recreation leaders from the City of Whittier's Community Services Dept. The program has grown tremendously since it's inception in Feb. of 2000. More than 100 kids attend each day. Homework is a priority. The Club Dexter kids also participate in many different enrichment activities, sports, educational and recreational trips. For more information please call Abby at (562) 945-8287.
RED RIBBON WEEK PANCAKE BREAKFAST
How do hot pancakes sound on a cool
autumn morning? If pretty good, youre like most of the hundreds of Whittierites that come out each year to support of the SKILLS Foundation to experience an entertaining morning featuring local performers.
STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE
The terrible tragedy at Columbine High School brought school safety into the forefront of public thought. Concerned educators and community members sought ways to help students feel safer on their respective school campuses. Locally, the SKILLS Foundation, Whittier Union High School District, and the City of Whittier joined forces and created S.A.V. (Students Against Voilence).
Our thanks go out to the many parents,
high school students, and other community members who volunteer their
services to help make the dance a success. Dances are held on the first
Friday of each month, October through June, from 7 P.M. to 10 P.M. For
more information, please call (562) 945-8287.
