Students Agains Violence

The terrible tragedy at Columbine High School brought school safety into the forefront of public thought. Concerned educators and community members sought ways to help students feel safer on their respective school campuses. Locally, the SKILLS Foundation, Whittier Union High School District, and the City of Whittier joined forces and created S.A.V. (Students Against Voilence).

Separate phone lines that bypass the Whittier Union High School District switchboard were set up at California, La Serna, Pioneer, Santa Fe, and Whittier high schools. Each phone line goes directly to an answering machine that is monitored by an Assistant Principal at each of the five schools. Students are able to report potential problems anonymously, twenty four hours a day. The answering machines have remote access capabilities, allowing the Assistant Principals to check messages after school and on weekends, if necessary.

Thank you to the Norris Foundation for providing funding to keep this important program running.
